  • Stanford Medicine today reported results of the Apple Heart Study app at the American College of Cardiology’s 68th Annual Scientific Session and Expo. The Apple Heart Study app was released in November of 2017. The study lasted eight months and included 400,000 participants from all 50 states. Apple and Stanford joint study was to evaluate the use of Apple Watch’s irregular rhythm notification. The Apple Watch checks the wearer’s heart rhythm in the background periodically can send notifications if an irregular heart rhythm or atrial fibrillation (AFib) appear at any time. As part of the study, if an irregular heart rhythm was identified, participants received a notification on their Apple Watch and iPhone, a telehealth consultation with a doctor and an electrocardiogram (ECG) patch for additional monitoring. The study showed 0.5 percent of the over 400,000 participants received an irregular heart rhythm notification those who sought medical advice following their irregular rhythm notification, used the information collected to have a more in-depth discussion with their doctors. Apple’s COO Jeff Williams said “We are proud to work with Stanford Medicine as they conduct this important research and look forward to learning more about the impact of Apple Watch alongside the medical community,” going on to say “We hope consumers will continue to gain useful and actionable information about their heart health through Apple Watch.” Sumbul Desai, MD, Apple’s vice president of Health said “As physicians, we are always trying to find ways to offer patients health information that is meaningful to them for individualized care” going on to say “Seeing medical research reflect what we’re hearing from consumers is positive and we’re excited to see Apple Watch helping even more consumers in the future while collaborating with the medical community to further research.” This is a huge win for Apple as this...
  • Spotify claims we’re blocking their access to products and updates to their app. Let’s clear this one up right away. We’ve approved and distributed nearly 200 app updates on Spotify’s behalf, resulting in over 300 million downloaded copies of the Spotify app. The only time we have requested adjustments is when Spotify has tried to sidestep the same rules that every other app follows. We’ve worked with Spotify frequently to help them bring their service to more devices and platforms: When we reached out to Spotify about Siri and AirPlay 2 support on several occasions, they’ve told us they’re working on it, and we stand ready to help them where we can. Spotify is deeply integrated into platforms like CarPlay, and they have access to the same app development tools and resources that any other developer has. We found Spotify’s claims about Apple Watch especially surprising. When Spotify submitted their Apple Watch app in September 2018, we reviewed and approved it with the same process and speed with which we would any other app. In fact, the Spotify Watch app is currently the No. 1 app in the Watch Music category. Spotify is free to build apps for — and compete on — our products and platforms, and we hope they do. Spotify wants all the benefits of a free app without being free. A full 84 percent of the apps in the App Store pay nothing to Apple when you download or use the app. That’s not discrimination, as Spotify claims; it’s by design: Apps that are free to you aren’t charged by Apple. Apps that earn revenue exclusively through advertising — like some of your favorite free games — aren’t charged by Apple. App business transactions where users sign up or purchase digital goods outside the app aren’t...

Apple Earnings Fall Flat As Expected

Apple released their earnings report and while the company did not do the stellar numbers they always do the numbers are still impressive to say the least. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated in the earnings report “While it was disappointing to miss our revenue guidance, we manage Apple for the long term, and this quarter’s results demonstrate that the underlying strength of our business runs deep and wide, Our active installed base of devices reached an all-time high of 1.4 billion in the first quarter, growing in each of our geographic segments. That’s a great testament to the satisfaction and loyalty of our customers, and it’s driving our Services business to new records thanks to our large and fast-growing ecosystem.” As expected iPhone revenue declined by 15 percent from the prior year to me this big because this is the holiday quarter meaning fewer people wanted a new iPhone for the holidays but it is important to point out this is an iPhone S year. Total revenue from all other products and services grew 19 percent and services revenue reached an all-time high of $10.9 billion, up 19 percent over the prior year. Apple Music has been growing by leaps and bounds. This year Apple partnered with carriers and other companies like Amazon to bring Apple music to the world. This number does not surprise me Apple is heading in the right direction. Revenue from the Mac, iWatch, AirPods, HomePod, and Accessories also reached all-time highs, growing 9 percent and 33 percent, respectively, and revenue from iPad® grew 17 percent. I would like to point out here that Apple did up their prices on all hardware that might be a reason for this growth. But I will say I see a lot of people with Apple Watches as well. A...
  • If nothing else, the addition of ECG/EKG reinforced Apple’s commitment to evolving the Watch into a serious medical device. The company has long looked to bring its best-selling wearable to various health insurance platforms, and, according to a new report, it’s reaching out to multiple private Medicare plans in hopes of subsidizing the product. If Medicare companies bite, the move would make the $279+ tracker much more successful for older users. Along with electrocardiograph functionality, last year’s Series 4 also features fall detection, an addition that could make it even more appealing to the elderly and healthcare providers. The new report cites at least three providers that have been in discussions with the company. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on hearing back until the ink is dry on those deals. For Apple, however, such a partnership would help increase the target audience for a product that’s been a rare bright spot in the wearable category. Apple’s not alone in the serious health push, of course. Fitbit has also been aggressively pursuing the space. Today the company announced its inclusion in the National Institutes of Health’s new All of Us health initiative. Techcrunch Another route that Apple is looking at to make up for iPhone sales
  • Recently four companies have been battling to be the most valuable in the world. – Amazon – Microsoft – Apple – Google Apple was the first to become a Trillion dollar company followed by Microsoft. It should be noted that this back and forth of who is the most valuable company in the world is happening in part for several reasons. The first reason is Microsoft turning the company around under the new leadership of CEO Satya Nadella and a large bet on cloud being the future of Microsoft. Software as a Service (SaaS) is the backbone of Microsoft’s success with Azure, Office 365 and Windows Store being at the forefront of Microsoft success. Microsoft has seen growth in the Azure space jumping 90% a quarter. The second is Google is really the only player in the search market and has no real completion in the largest part of their business. Google has had major success in diversification getting into mobile with Android and moving Chrome from a browser to its own operating system and moving Gsuite into the enterprise. Google is one of the best ran companies in tech. Amazon is another company like Google in a league of their own they are the largest online retailer and the only company to offer any service like Prime as a bundle. Amazon manager to start a new market with Alexa the same way Apple started the smartphone market with the iPhone. Amazon to this day is pretty much the only game in town for books and have now moved into to grocery store business. Jeff Benzo knows what he is doing. Another reason is Apple has been a victim as of late of the change in industry market. For over a decade Apple enjoyed constant growth and record hardware sales...
  • Apple Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. announced a partnership Monday that aims to increase the number of mobile applications for businesses available on iPhones and iPads. As part of the agreement, Salesforce is updating its app with Apple’s latest features, including integrating it with digital voice assistant Siri, Face ID security and Business Chat, an iMessage customer service function. The companies are also working on a software development kit that will more easily allow businesses to write apps for iPhones and iPads that run on the Salesforce platform. “Einstein could not be more excited to be friends with Siri!,” Salesforce Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff tweeted. “This is the best of both worlds.” Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed. Bloomburg I wonder if Microsoft knew this was coming and that is why they made the announcement they did about partnering with Adobe or Salesforce and Apple made this announcement to drown out Microsoft’s.
  • Recently I have been messing around with Pandora and their full music service and I have to say it has a great look and feel. Pandora is considered the godfather of music streaming as they were one of the first music streaming services online. Pandora has struggled in recent years with Spotify and Apple Music growing in numbers but it’s important to remember Pandora is an internet radio company and makes the majority of their revenue on ads. Recently in their earnings report, Pandora mentioned they have about 5.5 million subscribers to their paid services. Pandora does two paid service tears one being Pandora Plus $4.99 which is internet radio only with no ads or Pandora Premium for $9.99 being their fill on music service. Pandora has not disclosed which service has the majority of subscribers. Apple has over 40 million subscribers and Spotify has 70 million subscribers making it look like Pandora has little to no market share. Pandora has mentioned that they have over 90% of users listening through mobile which is very impressive, to say the least. Pandora who does make a majority of its revenue via advertising like most radio companies. Back in September SiriusXM invested $480 million dollars in a strategic investment with Pandora. Then in March Pandora acquired tech startup AdsWizz. AdsWizz tech aligned with Pandora’s specifically in the areas of audio monetization and ad-buying capabilities. Pandora says that it will continue to invest in AdsWizz technology that supports its core business. It’s important to realize that Pandora has 74.7 million active users which is a drop of about 6% compared to the previous year. It’s import to realize that Apple and Spotify offer artist based radio which can and has hurt Pandoras business. When you are comparing Apple Music to Pandora it can be hard because Apple Music...

  • This year marks the beginning of a fierce battle of smartphones. All the phone makers are set to compete valiantly and determined to win the war. Where iPhone claims to have introduced features and tech no device has ever seen or introduced, others too are coming up with strategies to eclipse the launching of the phone genie. Let’s have a look at what each company has prepared and shielded their sets with for the war. SAMSUNG GALAXY S8 Spring announced the launching of Samsung’s Galaxy S8. It has yet to be seen though whether it will trump the soon to be uncovered iPhone 8 or not. One is bound to be amazed and impressed by Galaxy S8 even if you are an iPhone user. All that Samsung has bragged about is packed into a dazzling curved-glass shell with an edge-to-edge infinity Display. expertreviews.co.uk The Galaxy S8 is said to present an all-new design that is abandoning the physical home button. The screen stretches across 5.8 inches area. Work on the virtual assistant, Bixby, is underway. DESIGN The Samsung Galaxy S8 is established as the Infinity Display. It bears little resemblance to the previous year’s Galaxy S7. In an effort to reduce the bezel size from both above and below the display, the home button has been pushed aside. Along with other contextual keys, it now resides virtually inside the handset’s software. The fingerprint sensor is now moved to the back of the device adjacent to the camera. The elegant DeX dock enables the S8 to turn into a mini desktop PC. The Snapdragon 835 is installed finally in Galaxy S8 making it currently the faster smartphone. It is power efficient and justifies the strong battery. A fall of few feets such as 3-foot would do no damage to the screen....
