• Microsoft updated many of its Android apps overnight. Among them is a major update to the Cortana Beta with a new user interface and additional functionality. On my Pixel, I received updates to Microsoft Launcher, Microsoft Edge, Your Phone Companion, and Microsoft News in the past 12 hours. But the biggest update, by far, was to the Beta version of Cortana, which has been upgrading to version 3.0. And it’s obviously a major new version of the app. Gone is the old purple backdrop, replaced by a more modern and cleaner-looking white UI. The default view, Upcoming, now displays the weather and any other events and items that are coming up soon. Thurrott I think Cortana with Amazon Alexa has a lot to offer and could be a real competitor for Google Assistant.

  • Microsoft and Amazon announced today that the Amazon Echo will be able to talk to Microsoft Cortana AI (Artificial Intelligence) Platform. Amazons very popular AI platform Alexa will be able to talk to Cortana, and Cortana will be able to talk to Alexa. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated in the post “Ensuring Cortana is available for our customers everywhere and across any device is a key priority for us,” going on to say “Bringing Cortana’s knowledge, Office 365 integration, commitments, and reminders to Alexa is a great step toward that goal.” Users will have access to Alexa and Cortana features no matter what platform they are using. If you are by your Echo you could Cortana to booking a meeting, accessing work calendars, or reading your work email. The same goes for if you are on a Windows 10 computer you could as Alexa to make a change to your smart home device, check the status of Amazon orders or interact with Alexa skills to listen to Sirius Radio. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said “The world is big and so multifaceted. There are going to be multiple successful intelligent agents, each with access to different sets of data and with different specialized skill areas. Together, their strengths will complement each other and provide customers with a richer and even more helpful experience,” Alexa and Cortana will begin talking to each other later this year. What surprised me is how long Siri has been around and Amazon never reached out to Apple who is not offering a smart speaker competitor until recently and really is not even a competitor for Amazon in its current form. On top of that Amazon had time to talk to Apple before their HomePod debut and HomePod will not even debut until December reports are saying....
  • Microsoft announced Fitbit skills for Microsoft Cortana. Microsoft may have dropped support for the Microsoft band but they are still getting into the fitness world with the addition of Fitbit for Cortana. Gurpreet Singh Pall / Partner Director of Program Management, Bing and Cortana Ecosystem writes “Tracking your fitness goals just got easier with the Fitbit skill for Cortana.” Adding “With this new skill for Cortana, from our partners at Fitbit, it is now easier than ever to monitor your health and fitness goals – just by asking Cortana.” In May Microsoft released the Cortana Skills Kit for developers to allow for better and easier integration with the Cortana AI. Users can now access Fitbit data through Cortana on any Windows 10 device or Cortana on iOS and Android. This is a huge chance for Microsoft to persuade users to use Cortana since Fitbit has said it has over 50 Million registered users. Microsoft has been trying to be completive in the AI marketplace adding Cortana to smart speakers and trying to break into the fitness consumer space which they have had little to no success with over the past few years. The setup looks easy you connect your Microsoft account to your Fitbit account. Microsoft release a few commands for everyone to try “Hey Cortana, ask Fitbit how much water I’ve had today” “Hey Cortana, ask Fitbit how many calories do I have left to eat” “Hey Cortana, ask Fitbit how many steps do I have left” “Hey Cortana, ask Fitbit how many workouts I need to do this week” “Hey Cortana, Ask Fitbit how am I doing today” To get started with Fitbit and Cortana just say “Hey Cortana, Open Fitbit,” it’s that easy to get started.

    Cortana For The Business Desktop

There has been speculation for months about where Microsoft is going to take Cortana in the very competitive speech recognition and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Market. Amazon Echo the market leader using their device as an extension of their website and to better serve content consumption from their customer’s purchases have been out on the market and generating revenue. Google Home trailing second have already built and sold the brand using the product to collect search results and sell their products and services. Surprising Apple has yet to get into the market as they kicked off the push for voice commands with Siri on the iPhone. Microsoft with the huge Windows 10 push has managed to try and put Cortana on every desktop. But is the desktop a place where voice recognition and AI will have much growth. I know many users of Amazon Echo but I do not know many users that use Cortana on the desktop. When you think about Cortana on the desktop it makes a lot of sense I mean you can harness the power of your desktop by enabling Hey Cortana but I don’t see many people that do this. To enable Hey Cortana is simple Press the Windows key + S simultaneously to open Cortana. Click the Notebook button. It’s the little notebook icon underneath the house icon on the left side of your screen. Click on Settings. Click on the On/Off switch underneath the Hey Cortana heading. I like the fact that on my desktop I can Hey Cortana and say something like play music and it will pull up groove while I am in the middle of typing something. You can pull up Google in a meeting just by saying Hey Cortana open Google. I think these are valuable assets and tools for...
