  • Imgur is launching video after years of hosting still images and GIFs on its platform. “This is a monumental shift for our future, and it furthers our commitment to becoming the world’s greatest community powered entertainment destination,” the company said in its blog post. Now you can hear the audio that might’ve originally accompanied GIFs and memes across the web. Roy Sehgal, Imgur’s COO, tells The Verge that the company is “breaking the sound barrier to make Imgur an even better community-powered entertainment experience.” The Verge I wonder how much traffic if any YouTube will loose from the Reddit crowd that use Imgur and will now use it for video instead of YouTube.
  • According to Alexa – the Amazon-owned web traffic analyzing platform – more people now visit Reddit than Facebook in the US. Spotted, of course, on Reddit by user IamATechieNerd, the stats will be a big boost for the social sharing platform, especially with many users still irked about the recent re-design. It’s important to note that analyzing web traffic using a tool like Alexa is not an exact science, but it’s interesting that it has now put Reddit ahead of Facebook. If the stats are to be believed, Google is still the most visited site, followed by YouTube, Reddit, and Facebook, with Amazon rounding out the top five. The Next Web
  • When Google first passed Microsoft in terms of stock market value six years ago, it looked like the companies were headed in opposite directions. But over the past 12 months, Microsoft has surged 40 percent, more than five times Alphabet’s gain, and has again become the more valuable of the two. As of Tuesday’s close, Microsoft was worth $749 billion and Alphabet’s market capitalization stood at $739 billion. CNBC Microsoft made a great CEO choice and he really turned the company around.
  • The creators of the encrypted email service, ProtonMail, have released a free version of their ProtonVPN VPN software for macOS. Even though the free version does not contain the full features that you would come to expect from a paid VPN service it is more than capable of obfuscating IP addresses and your location. Bleeping Computer I jumped on this service early and I have never regretted it.
  • There is always a reason why consumers are drawn to a particular brand of product. Apple has the record for drawing people in, and not just Americans, why? Ease of use, that’s why! You need to understand that the exterior design alone is not the only reason Apple products are still at the forefront of the world’s multimedia technology. Hidden designs and also compatibility of the products software and hardware within Apple’s iPod and Mac have really helped to achieve this. Compatibility? This simply means that the users of Apple products really get to enjoy using the product and truly have a trouble-free experience. For example; the design of Apple Mac OSX offers a fast and very logical operating system, which truly surpasses Windows Vista in almost every area – No wonder the character, Carrie Bradshaw of the show, Sex and The City, preferred to write her column pieces using an Apple Mac. The ease of use even extends to the software that is known to come with the purchase of every Apple Mac, such as Safari web browser. Safari’s function does not stop at finding information very quickly from the internet, it is also known to: • Keep up with the newest web technology • Help to organize your data • Assist you in distinguishing one item from another. Apple’s Safari is known as the number one web browser in the world, and the recognition of other software from Apple such as the iLife suite applications, is to a degree because of the constant revisions. One of the great things about Apple’s software specialist designers is that they never wait for things to happen first! They are constantly searching for different ways to keep developing and improving. The users of Apple Mac are always confident that their software is...
  • The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) has dramatically changed the development opportunities on Windows, and has become very popular. Microsoft has updated it continuously as well, bringing requested features and updates to really improve the experience. With the April Update, there’s once again some nice additions to Linux support on Windows. What was once a somewhat arduous task, installing Linux distros on Windows now is something that’s moved to the Store, and for the April Update, there’s a couple of new distros available. Kali Linux is now an option, as well as the very popular Debian GNU/Linux. For those that want to run multiple distros, Windows 10 supports having multiple versions installed and running simultaneously. AnandTech
  • With so much choice in the field of streaming music, any package on the market has to offer something special to stand out from the competition. Looking to better compete with the likes of Apple Music and Spotify, Pandora has launched a new Premium Family package. The new package offers unlimited access to all of Pandora’s premium features for up to six people. The price is just $15 per month, but there’s a 60-day free trial available so you can try it out for size first. Pandora explains that the new package offers “all of the features of Pandora Premium to up to six unique Pandora accounts simultaneously” and costs $14.99 USD monthly or $164.89 annually. BetaNews Pandora way late out of the gate with this. I wonder since they only have 2 million paid subscribers if this will drop there revenue a bit.
  • Oracle plans to drop from Java its serialization feature that has been a thorn in the side when it comes to security. Also known as Java object serialization, the feature is used for encoding objects into streams of bytes. Used for lightweight persistence and communication via sockets or Java RMI, serialization also supports the reconstruction of an object graph from a stream. Removing serialization is a long-term goal and is part of Project Amber, which is focused on productivity-oriented Java language features, says Mark Reinhold, chief architect of the Java platform group at Oracle. Infoworld I am glad they are fixing this issue from 1997 🙂
  • Oracle has agreed to acquire DataScience for an undisclosed amount. DataScience has developed a suite of machine learning and AI tools to increase the efficiency of data scientist workflows. ORCL has been an active acquirer of technology startups; with a new technology cycle of machine learning and AI, I expect to see more of the same. Seeking Alpha Oracle just like Microsoft is really doubling down on cloud and collaboration.
