Michael Connelly

  • The Poet is the prequel to the book The Narrows a Harry Bosch Novel by Michael Connelly I reviewed back in April of last year. This book centers around Jack McEvoy a crime reporter for the Rocky Mountain News Paper. Jack’s twin brother commits suicide which does not sit well for Jack, something feels out of place to him. Jack’s investigative reporter skills go into high gear which leads him to a run in with the FBI and opens a large case surrounding police suicides. Rachel Walling who is notorious for appearing in Harry Bosch novels gets introduced in this book and becomes involved with Jack McEvoy. I remember Rachel appearing and having a large role in the Harry Bosch novel The Narrows, but it was fun as a reader and to get more background on her from her original appearance. If you like the Rachel Walling character like I do she appears in several other Michael Connelly books staring Bosch and Jack McEvoy second book The Scarecrow. I really like how Michael Connelly takes you into the world of reporting. Michael Connelly who worked at the Los Angeles Times before a successful novel career really gets into detail about the life of a reporter. Jack McEvoy has the usual reporter stuff going on deadlines and chasing down leads but since Michael Connelly has experience with this as a former writer for a newspaper, it just looks and feels more detailed and authentic than some of the other books I have read over the years with a reporter as the main character. The one downside to this books is it’s a bit dated since it was published in 1997. That is not the fault of the author or of the publisher in any way. It’s fun to read about Jack...
  • The Black Echo is the first book from the Harry Bosch series written by Michael Connelly. The book follows Hollywood homicide detective Harry Bosch threw a murder mystery after the body of a Vietnam War veteran is discovered in a storm tunnel. Bosch recognizes the guy as an old war buddy who had worked with him in the tunnel system during the war. While on the trail of the killer Bosch discovers his friend’s death is linked to a series of bank robberies involving Vietnam tunnel rats as they’re called.  Bosch finally gets a lead from a witness but when the witness turns up dead Bosch realizes there must be a leak in the FBI and must find out how deep this goes in the bureau. Bosch himself is under investigation from internal affairs for being too close to his last case. When Bosch finally gets a lead at half way house for war veterans he is able to ID the two other men involved in the bank robberies but what he does not realize is there just pawns in the grand scheme of things. After a long night of stake out with Bosch’s FBI liaison the two internal affair agents make a mistake that causes a bloody shoot out killing several people. Bosch using his skills from the war chases the men down threw a tunnel system and finally finds out who is behind this entire robbery and homicide case. Michael Connelly does a great job in this book of describing Hollywood and the surrounding area you are really able to get a feel for the surroundings. Everything is well explained I am not an expert in police lingo but the author does a great job of explaining everything so you do not get lost in the conversation or...
  • The Reversal is the third installment of Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller (The Lincoln Lawyer) series and is the first time we see Mickey Haller team up with Harry Bosch from New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly’s flagship Bosch series. Defense attorney Mickey Haller is recruited to prosecute the high-profile retrial of a brutal child murder. After 24 years in prison, convicted killer Jason Jessup has been exonerated by new DNA evidence. Haller must team up not only Bosch but his ex-wife a full time district attorney to convict Jessup a second time. Together, Bosch and Haller set off on the case LAPD Detective Bosch must find a runaway eyewitness reluctant to testify after so many years. In the meantime Haller must deal with Jessup being out on bail and trying to put together a case on evidence 24 years old. During the road to building a case Haller must deal with a sly and crafty defense attorney that loves the media and using the media to his advantage. All this while Harry Bosch must stay on Jessup’s tail using surveillance and his detective skills. This is my favorite book out of Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller series having both Haller and Bosch working together on a case pulls you into the book. The other thing that really draws you in is having Haller a veteran defense attorney being the prosecutor gives you insight to how he thinks and his pure skill set for the law. I would give this book 5 stars it’s a great book I would rate this as best book Michael Connelly has written. Buy Now On Amazon Support The Technology Geek The Reversal (A Lincoln Lawyer Novel)

  • This terrific follow-up to The Lincoln Lawyer, featuring troubled defense lawyer Mickey Haller, also includes famed police detective Harry Bosch, who has been a hero in thirteen previous Connelly mysteries. Though Haller and Bosch work on opposite sides (one on defense and one on prosecution) and even live on opposite sides of the bay, they are thrown together against their wills and must cooperate if they are going to see justice served. Haller has just returned to law practice after a hiatus in which he has dealt with his demons and his addictions, the result of a long, painful hospitalization and several complex surgeries after he was “gut shot.” Haller has inherited the entire caseload of former prosecutor Jerry Vincent, who became a defense attorney after Haller beat him soundly in a court case. Vincent has been murdered in the garage beside his office, his laptop and case notes missing, with the biggest case of his career due for trial in less than a week. Walter Elliot, head of the highly successful Archway Pictures, is being tried for the murder of his wife and her lover, and he refuses to agree to a continuance, even though Haller, new to the case, recommends it. This case, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, soon begins to overlap with another of Vincent’s cases–one taken pro bono, and not in any of Vincent’s  files or on his calendar–a complete “mystery case” to Haller. As he works, Haller relies on stalwart friends and associates, all of whom show their own personalities here as they support Haller and try to keep him from backsliding under stress. His first former wife, Maggie McPherson, a prosecutor, needs to be reassured that he is stable enough to be a father again to his daughter. His second former wife, Lorna...
