This has been a major week for Sony as they have had two major announcements for PlayStation. Sony announced on July 1 that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will stop in January 2028. All new PlayStation games will only be available digitally via the PlayStation Store or via digital codes sold by retailers.
Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 5 Pro, already shipped without a physical disc, though gamers could still purchase the company’s attachable disc drive separately. On a side note, Rockstar Games is not releasing physical discs for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of GTA VI, which release later this year.
The Verge is reporting that Xbox is testing a disc-to-digital feature that digitizes a physical game collection.
“This digital entitlement is tied to the specific disc, and it will move from account to account if you swap the physical game with a friend or log in to a different Xbox profile and try to play a disc-based game,” Warren explained. “ If the game is available on Xbox Cloud Gaming and you have a Game Pass subscription, you’ll be able to stream it. If it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, you’ll also be able to access it on PCs and handhelds.”
Sony is removing access to 551 movies and TV shows from PlayStation libraries in the Europe region on September 1, 2026, due to an expired licensing agreement. Users who purchased this content are not being offered refunds or compensation for the content they are losing. Movies that users are losing are A-list movies like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Total Recall, From Dusk Till Dawn and many others.
PlayStation’s End User Agreement, as with most digital storefronts, states that users purchase licenses to view content, which can be removed upon the expiry of licensing agreements.
It will be interesting to see if Sony gets a deal for the Movies and TV shows before September.
