Age of Empires 2, one of my favorite strategy games, is coming to MacOS on May 28th. To me, more specifically, Age of Empires 2 is making a comeback to Mac. Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition will be released on macOS on May 28, nearly 25 years after the release of the original game on Mac OS X in October 2001. Both the original Age of Empires trilogy and the Age of Mythology spin-off were all released on Mac in the early 2000s.
The Age of Empires Website Says
“Lead diverse civilizations spanning a thousand years of history. Grow a Dark Age hamlet into an Imperial Age citadel. Build a thriving economy, assemble your armies, and do battle across historical single-player campaigns, the hugely replayable skirmish mode, and with other macOS players in online multiplayer.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition comes complete with razor-sharp 4K visuals, a fully remastered soundtrack, and includes three expansions with the base game: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes. Newcomers to the series and returning veterans alike can look forward to all the fast-paced base-building and warfare that made this game a classic, given new life over two decades of refinement and additional content.”
Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition lands on Steam for macOS on May 28th, with a Mac App Store release to come later in the year. The game will only be available on Apple Silicon Macs running at least the M1 chip or MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip. This will be the first game that Microsoft releases on macOS in five years. It’s important to note that Blizzard released many of their games for Mac. I wonder if this is part of the Microsoft strategy that they have spoken about, Xbox everywhere.
