I get Tweeted and messaged a lot by readers asking me about who sells the most smartphones, and which one is the best. Smartphones at times come down to preference and what you prefer to use day to day. I wanted to shed a little light on smartphone sales numbers as of late.

Google sold 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017 making it the bestselling phone for Google with sales up almost 40% from the prior year with the original Pixel release. Google has been marketing the Pixel 2 hard with constant ads on YouTube TV, Twitter, and other places. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were riddled with issues from the start with phones being shipped with no operating system, display issues and fingerprint reader problems that all would get worked out over time. The saving grace for the Pixel 2 is the amazing camera. Google, I think is hoping to make their next Pixel phone much better by buying HTC’s Pixel team for $1.1 billion.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft started selling Lumia Windows phones again recently in an effort to grab a lower price point sale. The Lumia 950 is available for $399, alongside the Lumia 950 XL ($499), Lumia 650 ($199), and Lumia 550 ($139). I would point out that the Lumia is known for its great camera and Microsoft Phones sell better overseas then they do in America.

When you look at Apple’s first quarterly earnings reports for 2018 Apple reported that it sold 77.3 million iPhones in Q1 2018. It just shows the huge gap between Google’s phone sales and Apple’s phone sales, but I would like to point out that Samsung is clearly the number one Android smartphone manufacturer. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8 smartphones sold over 33 million units in 2017 making it the clear number one Android smartphone manufacturer and number two smartphone manufacturer behind Apple.

I still really like my Pixel 2, but the Apples iPhone X is attractive with its edge to edge display. Apple has noted slower than normal sales numbers on the iPhone X smartphone due to its high price point and different approach with no home button.
