The best jobs in tech are those that allow you to work from home. According to Robert Half, 77% out of 28,000 professionals said they’d be interested in working from home if given the opportunity. The work from home job force has increased by 80% between 2005 and 2012, according to Global Workplace Analytics.
There’s no need to leave your house since most of these jobs can be performed on your computer within a virtual environment. Most remote positions look like your typical IT or help desk position, but there are some that are more in-depth. Here are six ways on how to make money from home in the tech industry.
1. Computer Programmers
Computer programmers are responsible for resolving errors that computer users come across. They also administer tests to new apps, programs, and software. This role provides a wide variety of tasks from writing and reviewing code to retrieving and storing data. Their responsibilities change on a daily basis and they get to work in the comfort of their own home. But it’s required for computer programmers to work in an area of their house that’s not interrupted by loud noises or chatter. Working in a quiet room is helpful for examining code and working on complex matters.
2. Cloud & Database Administrators
Database administrators perform multiple tasks in an effort to keep database secure in an cloud environment. Cloud and database administrators have become an increasingly popular work from home option. Most tech jobs that have “administrator” in the name is ideal for most remote positions, such as cloud-based administrators or remote administrators. Most of the online job postings ask for someone with several years of experience, but can live anywhere in the world.
3. IT Consultant
IT consultants have to know a wide variety of skills to perform their job. They must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills since they work directly with clients. The role of an IT consultant can range from solving problems to helping clients meet their goals. If you’re someone who enjoys problem-solving, talking to people, and helping a company achieve its goals, then IT consultation is the right career for you. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the morning commute.
4. Help Desk, Support or Technician
Most of these positions are similar in some way. Nonetheless, all of these positions are available as remote and work at home opportunities. These roles range from basic Level 1 support to specialized technical support roles. For example, a remote IT lab technician could earn as much as $120,000 per year. Not bad for not having to leave your house.
5. IT Project Manager
IT project managers ensure that a project is completed to the best of its ability. They’re responsible for making business and technological decisions, monitoring the progress of the project, and managing a large team of people. IT project managers who work from home are responsible for improving the motivation of their works and increasing communication among team members. These skills are critical as the workforce expands into a global workforce with team members working in various locations.
6. Software Development
Both software developers and programmers are perfect roles that can be done at home. But the flexibility of that job depends on the company’s needs. A software developer focuses on coding and solving problems, while a software programmer should know how to code within a certain environment. Roles that are focused solely on coding can make for good remote positions. If an organization is having trouble finding a programmer who knows Java or Python, chances are they might hire someone from another state.
