The hacker group GNAA has claimed responsibility for the Tumblr worm and has said 8,600 unique Tumblr users have been affected. The massive bug is sweeping Tumblr today and has infecting some of the biggest blogs, including USA Today, Reuters, The Verge, and CNET.
The post is rather distasteful with a lot of derogatory words but in the end of the post it states
“P.S. Attempting to delete these posts will delete your tumblr account ;] But, by all means, go ahead!”
While Tumblr remains online, posting is currently disabled. To be cautious may I would avoid Tumblr entirely until the mess is sorted out. If you encounter the pop-up, do not click any part of it instead, kill your browser immediately.
There is a generic statement from Tumblr saying
“‘Dearest ‘Tumblr’ users.’ If you have viewed this post, please log out of all browsers that may be using Tumblr immediately. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible.”
We will see how long Tumblr remains in this infected state. This is not the first time in recent weeks Tumblr has had issues or been the attention of the press. If you remember in October the site had prolonged outage. After that Mark Cuban said The Mav’s going to use Tumblr after some conflict over the direction of Facebook.
