Technology s a very important element in today’s society and no branch of society escapes the grasp of technology. Accounting is no exception and if you want to do your books you are going to need a program like Excel or else you’re just not going to be very efficient nowadays.  However, not a lot of people know how Excel can help them improve their accounting situation. Some people don’t have their own accountant and have to handle the accounting by themselves even though it’s not their primary attribute or concern within their context of work. Still, it doesn’t hurt to know these simple tricks that you can pull off with Excel in order to make accounting easier.

Number formatting shortcuts

Formatting can be a tricky business and often times it’s a very tedious process. That is, of course, if you don’t know how to use Excel’s formatting shortcuts to your advantage. If you don’t know about the formatting shortcuts, prepare to be amazed as you can use these to save precious time.

  • Ctrl+Shift+1 – introduces two decimal places into your number formatting
  • Ctrl+Shift+2 – Allows you to format your selection as time
  • Ctrl+Shift+3 – Allows you to format your selection as a date
  • Ctrl+Shift+4 – Allows you to format your selection as a currency
  • Ctrl+Shift+5 – Allows you to format your selection as a percentage
  • Ctrl+Shift+6 – Allows you to format your selection in exponential form

Navigating through results

Navigating through formulas and your cell data can be a very tedious task also and it can slowly eat away at your peace of mind. However, there is a simple solution for this. You can use a combination of two keys, specifically the Ctrl and tilde “~” combination in order to switch seamlessly between the two types of information. This can really be in handy when you are looking to easily review all of your data without any fuss.

Using charts inside cells

Using chart inside cells can give you unique data management advantages. You can do this via the Insert menu in Excel and it allows you to place a chart of your choosing into a cell. You can modify a bunch of perimeters such as the range or type of the chart in order to create something that will help you manage data more easily. It’s a tool that a lot of Excel users don’t really know about which means that they are missing on a great feature.
